What Time Is It? Adventure Time!

Assalamualaikum / Peace be Upon You

After being pestered by some of my friends so frequently in social network websites and forums, I finally watched Adventure Time when was finished watching Robot Chicken up until Season 5 (might going to write a blog entry regarding on that one too). I've watched Adventure Time till Season 4 which is now at Episode 19.

What is Adventure Time you might ask. Adventure Time is a Cartoon Network animated television series created by Pendleton Ward, that follows the adventures of Finn, a 14-year-old human boy, and his best friend Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Ward describes Finn as a "fiery little kid with strong morals", while Jake is based on Tripper Harrison, Bill Murray's character in the movie Meatballs.

Whenever people want to describe about Adventure Time to their friends, it might sound a little bit dark and gloomy. Well, it is a story about a young boy who is presumably the last human in a post-apocalyptic world whereby his best friend is a talking dog. To be honest, the series is quite fun and humorous in several episodes but it do tend to get boring in some of the episodes.

Here are my summary on the two main characters in the series:

Finn The Human

Finn is a 14-year-old human boy (it is assumed that he is the last human remaining since there were no other humans were around) who loves nothing more than going on adventures and saving the day. He wears a self-proclaimed 'awesome hat' which considered as his trademark that covers his extremely long flowing golden hair. He considered himself a hero as he and his best friend, Jake, would go around having adventures together. He has a huge crush on Princess Bubblegum but apparently was constantly friend zoning him, a mutual like affection with the Vampire Queen, Marceline Abadeer, and a love relationship with the Flame Princess. Throughout the series, Finn had wielded various type of swords but apparently he favors The Golden Sword as his weapon of choice. It is noted that he is afraid of the ocean, clowns, spiders, and being judged by older people due to his age.

Jake The Dog

Jake is Finn's best friend and adoptive brother. He is a 28-year-old (in "magical dog years") shape-shifting dog. His magic powers allow him to stretch or shrink any part of his body to any shape and almost any size, ranging from becoming gigantic to becoming incredibly small. Jake tends to act as a confidant and mentor to Finn (though he has a tendency to give somewhat sketchy advice in several episodes). Even though he is somewhat laid back, Jake loves going on an adventure with Finn. He is in love with Lady Rainicorn who is Princess Bubblegum's pet that can speaks Korean which is now pregnant. It is seems that he can get competitive when playing games and hates to lose.

Apparently, in this series also have several antagonists in it such as The Ice King, The Lich and Hunson Abadeer (Marceline's father) but the most apparent one would be The Ice King.

The Ice King

The Ice King is the series' main antagonist and sometimes become a protagonist of the series who is around 1,000 years old. Originally a human antiquarian named Simon Petrikov that lost both his mind and then his fiancée Betty after he wore the crown that he found. Losing his fiancée leads him to his obsession of capturing princesses to be his bride. He is a master of the martial art of Frijitsu, a technique calling upon the power of ice. Though defined as a sociopath by many, the Ice King is actually lonely and misunderstood (as he asked 'Why don't people like me?'), having a generally benevolent relationship with the penguins (especially the one named Gunter), along with the snow and ice beasts who populate his realm, and apparently, he's secretly envious of Finn and Jake for being such good friends. He is somewhat represent a guy that failed in relationship with women and everyone tends to hate him.

Throughout the series, Finn had been into several relationship with other female characters from various clans.

 Princess Bubblegum

Princess Bubblegum is a 18-year-old bubble gum humanoid, comparable to the inhabitants of Candy Kingdom, of which she rules, who are all composed of types of desserts and candies. Her proficiency in science and fluency in Korean and German are a testament to her high intelligence. While Princess Bubblegum is typically kind and well-mannered, her temper can be a powerful force when provoked. 

Princess Bubblegum kisses Finn

She was the former crush of Finn, although it wasn't clear whether or not the feeling was mutual. She often rolled her eyes at his advances, but at other times seemed genuinely flattered. I somewhat dislike her character because most of the troubles that happened are because of her experiments and the fact that she friend zoned Finn despite on the fact that he would do anything for her.

Marceline Abadeer

Marceline is a fun-loving and mischievous 1,000-year-old vampire Queen. Marceline plays an electric bass, which she made from her family's heirloom battle-axe. Unlike most vampires, she reveals that it's the color red she likes to suck out of various things, and blood is only appealing because it is red. Like a traditional vampire, she is vulnerable to sunlight and is capable of turning into a bat, varying in size. The show generally portrays her as a close friend of Finn and Jake, but she often feels alone. It is seems that she constantly like to mess with Finn's mind.

 Marceline kisses Finn

While Marceline has many things in common with Finn, it was stated that Marceline likes Finn for being 'just' himself, and nothing more or less. I like this character because she is somewhat rebelious but have a soft heart. Even though Finn and Jake were scared of her at the first time, they became friend with each other and willing to lend a hand whenever Marceline is in trouble.

 

Flame Princess

Flame Princess is the 14-year-old princess of the Fire Kingdom. Like all other inhabitants of the Fire Kingdom, she is covered with fire, the very flames emitted from her body being extensions of herself that intensify with rage. While she was referred to as being destructive by her own father, when he said "evil daughter", she has a more naive nature that prompts her to act on her emotions. Finn falls in love with her at the first sight, referring her as "the steam off a puppy's nose searching for ham in the snow" and "a cute little flower". 

Finn and Flame Princess' first kiss

As in Season 4 of the series, she is Finn's new love interest and current girlfriend. They went out on a date and share a kiss with each other. Though they are very different, Finn and Flame Princess share the same fiery passion and curiosity of the world around them, as well as being the same age. They are also both very impatient, although Flame Princess's impatience tends to lead to setting things on fire where as Finn just yells at people.

The series are now at Season 4 Episode 19. For me, it is an interesting and fun series even though like I stated before, can be pretty boring in some of the episodes. I could only hope that unlike some other cartoon series in America, this one would not be canceled and the story being stopped halfway. I could only hope.
